deli.wear
Exhibition, Fooddesign

http://www.dutchdesignweek.nl/event.php?id=1532

An titillating installation & tasting of edible ‘fashion fabrics’ made from vegetables, fruits, and herbs.

Food & eating designers Marjolein Wintjes and Eric Meursing of de culinaire werkplaats are specialized in the plate of the future, on which the meat and fish component experience a less prominent position.

With their conceptual and applied food & eating designs, the design couple wants to inspire people to shake up their culinary lifestyle.

The installation deli.wear can be experienced with all the senses. Deli.wear illustrates one of the duo’s major claims, which is  food equals fashion.

At the same time, deli.wear alludes to the vulnerability of the ecosystem, and the temporality of fashion, food & eating design.

To showcase the versatility of the in-company developed and produced edible paper, de culinaire werkplaats will also present some applied products.

Fashion show, Textile & Fashion, Workshop (English spoken)

http://www.dutchdesignweek.nl/event.php?id=1776

Fashion show, Textile & Fashion / Workshop, Textile & Fashion

On Wednesday the 27th of October, Material Sense highlights the special theme of materials and their significance for sustainable fashion.

Awearness Fair Fashion, platform for presentation and promotion of Sustainable fashion, showcases a special fashion show: Fair Fashion Made in Arnhem. Fashion city Arnhem is the origin of big fashion names. The area ‘Modekwartier Arnhem’ houses extraordinary designers who do not only create striking, high-quality fashion designs, but also observe social responsibility in doing business. In the fashion show, the selected designers show how they deal with the challenges of materials choices, beauty and sustainability in their creations.

The show is on view on this special fashion day, but as a designer, you can also create a fashion piece yourself! The workshop Materials for fair fashion challenges designers to make a hands-on piece in one day with specially selected materials and through the moulage technique.

Additional presentations will provide background information about materials, sustainable aspects and designs. There will also be room for questions and discussion during the visitors’ presentations.

MoreThanHip specialises in fashion accessories and jewellery that distinguish themselves through their design but are produced in a socially responsible manner. During the exposition at Strijp S, MoreThanHip shows new designs for bags and fashion accessories by the Dutch designer Manon Juliette (Toon van Tuijl Design Award 2008) and the Colombian designer Oscar Burgos, who both drew inspiration from geometrical patterns and nature. Their designs are carried out in recycled inner tubes of trucks and produced in Colombia according to Fair Trade standards. In addition, new work is shown of young designer Bernadette Braakman, who graduated from the AKN in Maastricht in 2009. When she was in Nepal, local materials and handicraft techniques inspired her into creating a series of jewellery.

Today Environment, a pioneer in sustainable furniture, has announced their first lifestyle line partnership with the launch of an exclusive lifestyle collection, Environment by Heather Heron. The line marks the first collaboration between Environment and noted accessories designer Heather Heron, and is the first lifestyle line to be housed under the Environment label. Known for her chic, modern and sustainable pieces, Heather Heron’s designs bridge luxury and responsibility, making her an ideal partner for this exciting venture. “We are excited to have found a design partner and friend who shared the Environment values, aesthetic and passion for found materials,” said Davide Berruto, CEO of Environment Furniture. “Heather’s positive energy and talent are inspiring.”

“My inspiration is rooted in creating beauty from limited resources. I feel this has come full circle to being a very modern way of life and what inspires my designs,” says Heron.

For the first collection, vintage U.S. military, organically tanned leather, surplus Japanese denim, Japanese antique textiles and Heron’s signature fabric, organic hemp textiles, were hand selected and built by artisans in California. Using reclaimed fabrics is a technique Environment has been employing for some time — even using some of these same materials for upholstery for their sofas and chairs.

Environment by Heather Heron includes organic throws, hand knotted beach blankets, travel bags, accessories for men and women, organic hand dyed scarves, and surf bags from reclaimed vintage military. These pieces exude an understated luxury that celebrates craftmanship and the art and history of these textiles.

Since launching in 2001, Environment, part design consortium, part modern craftsman — has been widely regarded as pioneers of sustainable design. Environment underscores its commitment to people and the planet through forward thinking values by using only materials and processes with low environmental impact. Mostly reclaimed, recycled or re-purposed wood and canvases, any new wood has been procured from only strictly managed certified forests. Environment is a proud member of Tropical Forest Trust (TFT), the preeminent organization working towards sustainable forest management.
